About Invisalign®
Invisalign has long been used to straighten teeth, and is now capable of treating many different orthodontic concerns, including the majority of malocclusions. Using a series of custom-made clear plastic aligners, Invisalign gradually straightens your teeth without the need for uncomfortable metal brackets or wires. You simply change aligners every two weeks, or as instructed by your orthodontist. Because the aligners are removable, you can take yours out anytime to brush and floss your teeth or eat foods that are off-limits with braces. Also, because the aligners are clear, they are nearly invisible, allowing you to keep your treatment private. Just make sure you wear each aligner for at least 22 hours per day. Invisalign Questions & Answers
How long is Invisalign treatment?
It depends on many factors, and only your orthodontist can decide for sure. However, Jennifer Stachel Orthodontics offers an accelerated option that can cut the length of your treatment by 30-50%.
Does Invisalign hurt?
It is normal to have a bit of irritation in your cheeks, tongue, or lips right after you start Invisalign. Your mouth is adapting to something completely new, and the soreness will go away quickly. In the meantime, we recommend a warm salt water rinse to aid in healing. You can also check the edges of your aligner to make sure they are completely smooth. If you notice any roughness, use a nail file to gently smooth out those spots. Many people also experience a bit of soreness in their teeth for a few days after each aligner change, which eases quickly. However, we try to be proactive in addressing this by using Cold Laser Therapy to accelerate healing and inhibit pain sensations in the nerves.
Do aligners affect speech?
Anytime you put something in your mouth, your muscles and nerves must get used to it. It’s possible that you may experience a slight lisp for a couple of days, but this will go away as soon as your tongue gets used to the aligner.
What do I need to know about eating, drinking, gum chewing, and smoking?
You can eat and drink whatever you like, and chew gum, while using aligners. However, we recommend removing your aligner for all meals and snacks, including gum, to avoid getting anything stuck to the aligner or discoloring it. Remember to brush your teeth and put the aligner back in as soon as you are finished. If removing the aligner is not practical, be sure to at least rinse both your mouth and the aligner with plain water when you are finished. Tobacco products can stain the aligners as well as your teeth. Sucking on sugar free mints, and drinking water, will not harm your aligners at all.
What if I break or lose an aligner or an attachment?
Call your orthodontist as soon as possible. We can order new replacement aligners, but your orthodontist will instruct you how best to proceed during the few days before they arrive.
How much does Invisalign cost?
The cost of Invisalign depends on many variables, including geographic location, the orthodontist’s skill and experience, the current condition of your teeth, and how long you will need to wear the aligners. In general, though, the average price in NYC is between $3,000 and $7,000. Read this related article for more information: How much does Invisalign cost in NYC?
